Medical students need more training in good scientific practice (GSP) to prevent misconduct and promote integrity. Pilot courses significantly improved students' knowledge and attitudes toward scientific integrity and misconduct.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Scientific Integrity
- Research Ethics
Background:
- German medical schools inadequately cover good scientific practice (GSP).
- Scientific misconduct and lack of integrity are significant concerns in medical research.
- GSP education is crucial for fostering ethical research conduct among future physicians.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate teaching units for GSP courses for medical students.
- To assess the impact of GSP education on students' knowledge and attitudes regarding scientific integrity and misconduct.
- To inform the integration of GSP into medical school curricula.
Main Methods:
- Literature review to inform curriculum development.
- Creation of GSP teaching units and materials.
- Pilot course implementation with pre-post evaluation of knowledge and attitudes.
Main Results:
- Statistically significant improvements in participants' knowledge and attitudes towards scientific misconduct.
- Most students lacked familiarity with fundamental GSP regulations and guidelines.
- A link was observed between students' unfamiliarity with GSP and their prior exposure to scientific misconduct.
Conclusions:
- GSP courses are essential for medical students to understand and apply ethical research norms.
- Curricula should align with students' experiences to enhance GSP learning.
- Effective GSP training can contribute to increasing the integrity of young researchers.
