Teachers can now design and deliver online or hybrid problem-based learning (PBL) more effectively. A new web-based application uses a model-driven approach and semi-structured data for flexible PBL implementation.
Area of Science:
- Educational Technology
- Computer Science Education
Background:
- Problem-based learning (PBL) is increasingly popular, driving demand for technological integration.
- Educators often lack the expertise in learning theories and technology to effectively design and implement online or blended PBL.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and test methods and tools for flexible, user-friendly online or hybrid PBL.
- To present a technical approach for a web-based PBL application supporting both authoring and runtime.
Main Methods:
- Developed a web-based application for problem-based learning (PBL).
- Employed a model-driven approach combined with semi-structured data management.
- Focused on supporting both the design (authoring) and execution (run-time) phases of PBL.
Main Results:
- The developed web-based application facilitates the design and delivery of online/hybrid PBL.
- The combined model-driven and semi-structured data approach proves effective for PBL processes.
- The application offers flexibility and low usage barriers for educators.
Conclusions:
- A model-driven approach with semi-structured data management is a promising solution for supporting online/hybrid PBL.
- This technical approach enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of authoring and delivering PBL.
- The developed application can significantly aid educators in implementing technology-enhanced PBL.

Steps in the Modeling Process
Attention is the first necessary component for observational learning. It involves focusing on what the model is doing and saying. For example, if you decide to take a drawing class to enhance your skills, you need to pay close attention to the instructor's words and hand movements. The characteristics of the model significantly...
