Advertising pictorial metaphors are processed faster than verbal ones. This study reveals visual pathways contribute to quicker understanding of image-based advertising meaning.
Area of Science:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Advertising Research
Background:
- Advertising utilizes pictorial metaphors to convey product messages.
- Understanding the cognitive processing of these visual metaphors is crucial for effective advertising.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the temporal processing of advertising pictorial metaphors.
- To compare the processing of metaphorical versus non-metaphorical advertising images.
Main Methods:
- Participants judged the semantic congruence of product words and advertising pictures.
- Electroencephalography (EEG) recorded brain activity, focusing on N1, N2, and Late Positive Component (LPC) amplitudes.
- A 2x2x3 repeated-measures ANOVA analyzed the effects of picture type, prime-target condition, and electrode site.
Main Results:
- Metaphorical pictures showed larger N1, N2, and LPC amplitudes compared to non-metaphorical ones.
- N1 (100-150 ms) showed broad distribution, N2 (200-300 ms) was frontally biased, and LPC (400-1000 ms) was parietally biased.
- These components reflect visual onset response, semantic violation detection, and semantic integration reanalysis.
Conclusions:
- Pictorial metaphors in advertising are processed more rapidly than verbal metaphors.
- The visual pathway plays a significant role in the faster processing of advertising pictorial metaphors.
