Short-term starvation rapidly achieved partial nitritation, a key step in biological nitrogen removal. This method effectively suppressed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) while preserving ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AerAOB) for efficient nitrite accumulation.
