Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Psychosocial risk factors significantly contribute to the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
  • Understanding these factors in patients with arterial hypertension (AH) and/or ischemic heart disease (IHD) is critical for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of psychosocial risk factors (PSRF) in ambulatory patients with AH and/or IHD.
  • To gather current data from 30 cities across the Russian Federation.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter, cross-sectional study conducted from 2016-2017.
  • Recruited 2775 patients aged 55+ with AH and/or IHD from state polyclinics.
  • Assessed social-demographic data, clinical characteristics, risk factors, therapy adherence, anxiety, depression, stress, and personality type D.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • High prevalence of PSRFs observed, with 67.8% experiencing elevated stress and 37.6% having type D personality.
  • 25.5% and 16.3% showed clinically significant anxiety and depression, respectively.
  • Lower education, income, social isolation, and cognitive decline were also prevalent, particularly in women and older individuals.

Conclusions:

  • This large-scale study confirms a high prevalence of PSRFs in Russian ambulatory patients with AH and/or IHD.
  • Despite some positive trends in anxiety and depression, their impact on CVD prognosis and quality of life necessitates optimized care.
  • Timely diagnosis and correction of psychosocial issues are essential for improving patient outcomes.
