Ecological Succession02:17

Ecological Succession

21.5K
Ecological succession is influenced by the processes of facilitation, inhibition, and toleration. Facilitation occurs when early successional species create more favorable ecological conditions for subsequent species, such as enhanced nutrient, water, or light availability. In contrast, inhibition happens when early successional species create unfavorable ecological conditions for potential successive species, such as limiting resource availability. In some cases, later successional species...

Second Law of Thermodynamics

27.0K
In the quest to identify a property that may reliably predict the spontaneity of a process, a promising candidate has been identified: entropy. Processes that involve an increase in entropy of the system (ΔS > 0) are very often spontaneous; however, examples to the contrary are plentiful. By expanding consideration of entropy changes to include the surroundings, a significant conclusion regarding the relation between this property and spontaneity may be reached. In thermodynamic models, the...

Enthalpy02:59

Enthalpy

48.1K
Chemists ordinarily use a property known as enthalpy (H) to describe the thermodynamics of chemical and physical processes. Enthalpy is defined as the sum of a system’s internal energy (E) and the mathematical product of its pressure (P) and volume (V):

Internal Energy02:00

Internal Energy

36.7K
The total of all possible kinds of energy present in a substance is called the internal energy (U), sometimes symbolized as E. Suppose a system with initial internal energy, Uinitial, undergoes a change in energy (transfer of work or heat), and the final internal energy of the system is Ufinal. Change in internal energy equals the difference between Ufinal and Uinitial.

Summary

Chemotherapy can cause long-term cognitive deficits in cancer survivors. A new study shows that microglia, immune cells in the brain, orchestrate these chemotherapy-related cognitive impairments.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Oncology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Increasing number of cancer survivors due to successful chemotherapy.
  • Long-term sequelae of cancer treatment include cognitive deficits impacting daily function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of microglia in chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment.

Main Methods:

  • The study by Gibson et al. (2019) in Cell utilized experimental models to examine the mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced cognitive dysfunction.

Main Results:

  • Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment is orchestrated by microglia.
  • Microglia play a central role in mediating the cognitive deficits associated with chemotherapy.
