Background:

Suicide is a leading cause of death nationally.
Existing national datasets lack specific coding for intimate partner violence (IPV) in suicides.
Individual case review is currently required to identify IPV in suicide data.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a novel coding scheme to quantify the percentage of suicides involving violence when intimate partner problems were identified.
To improve the identification of intimate partner violence in suicide cases within the Kentucky Violent Death Reporting System.

Main Methods:

Utilized data from the Kentucky Violent Death Reporting System (2005-2015).
Created a subset of suicide cases with identified intimate partner problems.
Conducted qualitative and quantitative analysis of incident narratives to identify contributing intimate partner violence.

Main Results:

Intimate partner problems were identified in 26% of known suicide circumstances.
Intimate partner violence was identified in 43% of cases with intimate partner problems.
Arguments or fights preceded suicide in 30% of cases with intimate partner problems, often immediately.

Conclusions:

Found supporting evidence that violence in intimate relationships exacerbates suicide risk.
The developed coding schema enhances the identification of intimate partner violence in suicides.
The coding scheme is easily replicable for broader application.
