Summary

Platelet factor 4 (PF4) levels are elevated in patients with septicaemia, indicating increased platelet activation. PF4 concentrations significantly decrease after antibiotic and surgical treatment, suggesting its utility as a monitoring marker.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Critical Care Medicine

Background:

  • Septicemia is a life-threatening condition characterized by a dysregulated host response to infection.
  • Platelet activation plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of septicemia and associated coagulation disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma concentrations of platelet factor 4 (PF4) in patients with septicemia.
  • To evaluate PF4 as a potential biomarker for platelet activation during septicemia and its response to treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma PF4 levels were measured in ten septicemia patients during the acute phase and after treatment.
  • Coagulation parameters including prothrombin time, fibrinopeptide A, AT III, and platelet counts were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Elevated PF4 levels (27.1 +/- 20.1 ng/ml) were observed in the acute phase of septicemia compared to normal values (4.7 +/- 1.2 ng/ml).
  • PF4 concentrations significantly decreased (10.6 +/- 7.3 ng/ml; p < 0.005) after antibiotic and surgical therapy.
  • Coagulation disorders and thrombocytopenia were noted in septicemia patients.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma PF4 measurement can serve as an in vivo indicator of platelet activation in septicemia.
  • PF4 monitoring may be valuable for assessing treatment efficacy and disease progression in septicemia.
