Summary

Regular cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) practice significantly improved nurses

Area of Science:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Nursing Education
  • Cardiovascular Resuscitation

Background:

  • Quality of chest compressions is critical for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) effectiveness.
  • Rural hospitals face unique challenges in maintaining healthcare provider skills due to lower patient volumes.
  • Annual CPR recertification may not be sufficient for skill retention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of regular CPR practice on the quality of chest compressions performed by nurses in a rural hospital setting.
  • To assess if monthly CPR practice improves specific components of high-quality CPR: depth, recoil, and rate.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective interventional trial was conducted at a rural British Columbia hospital.
  • Nurses participated in brief, monthly CPR practice sessions utilizing an interactive feedback device.

  • Chest compression quality was measured before and after the intervention period.
  • Main Results:

    • Significant improvements were observed in all three key components of high-quality CPR: compression depth, chest recoil, and compression rate.
    • Nurses demonstrated enhanced CPR skills and increased confidence post-intervention.

    Conclusions:

    • Monthly CPR practice with an interactive feedback device effectively improves the quality of nurses' chest compressions and their confidence in performing CPR.
    • Increased frequency of CPR practice, beyond annual requirements, is recommended for improving skill quality and retention, particularly in rural, low-volume settings.
