  • Colonic diverticulosis (CD) pathogenesis remains unclear.
  • Understanding CD prevalence and risk factors is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence, location, and clinical features of CD.
  • To investigate the association between CD and defecation posture.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 757 patients, divided into diverticulosis (n:95) and non-diverticulosis (n:662) groups.
  • Data collected on patient demographics, CD prevalence, location, and defecation habits.
  • Multivariable logistic regression analysis used to identify independent risk factors.

Main Results:

  • CD prevalence was 12.5%, most commonly in the sigmoid colon.
  • Older age and female sex were associated with CD.
  • Sitting during defecation (Western toilet use) was significantly more frequent and longer in the CD group.

Conclusions:

  • Sitting during defecation, particularly on Western-style toilets, appears to be an independent risk factor for developing colonic diverticulosis.
  • Defecation posture may play a significant role in CD development.
