Plasma microRNAs miR-21 and miR-23a are significantly elevated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. These elevated microRNAs (miRNAs) correlate with disease severity and may serve as diagnostic biomarkers for lung cancer.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Biomarker Discovery
Background:
- Lung cancer (LC) has a poor prognosis, necessitating improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
- Cell-free microRNAs (miRNAs) in plasma show promise as cancer biomarkers.
- The clinical utility of miR-21 and miR-23a in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) requires investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify differentially expressed miRNAs in NSCLC patient plasma.
- To evaluate miR-21 and miR-23a as potential biomarkers for early lung cancer detection.
- To assess the association of these miRNAs with clinicopathological parameters in NSCLC.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 45 NSCLC patients and 40 healthy controls.
- Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to measure plasma miR-21 and miR-23a levels.
- Statistical analysis to compare miRNA expression and correlate with clinicopathological features.
Main Results:
- Plasma miR-21 and miR-23a were significantly upregulated in NSCLC patients compared to controls (P<0.0001).
- Elevated miRNA levels correlated with disease grade, tumor size, and distant metastasis.
- A positive correlation was found between plasma miR-21 and miR-23a expression (r=0.784, P<0.01).
Conclusions:
- miR-21 and miR-23a may play an oncogenic role in lung cancer.
- These miRNAs show potential as prognostic factors and diagnostic biomarkers for NSCLC.
- Further large-scale prospective studies are recommended to validate these findings.

Cell Potential and Free Energy
Thermodynamics is the branch of physics dealing with the relationship between heat and other forms of energy. In an electrochemical cell, chemical energy is converted into electrical energy.
Thus, a link can be predicted between cell potential, free energy change, and the equilibrium constant for the reaction. Cell potential can also be measured as the oxidant or the reducing strength, and similar acid-base strength measures are reflected in equilibrium...
