Insights
This review helps pediatricians differentiate common infant skin conditions like miliaria and dermatitis from serious issues. It provides practical knowledge for accurate diagnosis and treatment of neonatal skin eruptions.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal Dermatology
- Pediatric Dermatology
- Clinical Pediatrics
Background:
- Neonatal and infant skin eruptions are frequent and cause parental concern.
- Distinguishing benign conditions from serious ones is crucial for appropriate management.
- Pediatricians require clear guidance on common dermatological presentations in newborns and infants.
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide a clinically focused overview of common neonatal and infant skin eruptions.
- To offer practical knowledge ('pearls') for differentiating various skin conditions.
- To discuss treatment strategies for prevalent pediatric skin issues.
Main Methods:
- Review of common neonatal and infant skin conditions.
- Clinical discussion focused on diagnostic differentiation.
- Inclusion of treatment strategies for discussed conditions.
Main Results:
- Miliaria, transient neonatal pustular melanosis, neonatal cephalic pustulosis, erythema toxicum neonatorum, diaper dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis are reviewed.
- Key differentiating features for each condition are highlighted.
- Effective treatment approaches are outlined.
Conclusions:
- Accurate differentiation of common infant skin conditions is achievable with focused clinical knowledge.
- Timely and appropriate treatment can alleviate parental concerns and ensure infant well-being.
- This review serves as a practical guide for pediatricians managing neonatal and infant dermatoses.
Abstract:
Skin eruptions are commonly encountered in the neonatal and infant period and can be a source of concern for providers and parents alike. We present a brief, clinically focused discussion on topics commonly encountered by the pediatrician with a focus on pearls of knowledge to help distinguish diseases from one another and from more serious conditions. We review miliaria, transient neonatal pustular melanosis, neonatal cephalic pustulosis, erythema toxicum neonatorum, diaper dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. Treatment strategies are also discussed. [Pediatr Ann. 2019;48(1):e16-e22.].

Common Names of Aldehydes and Ketones
Common names of aldehydes are derived from the names of their corresponding acid. For instance, the two-carbon aldehyde–acetaldehyde derives its name from the corresponding acid–acetic acid. Similarly, formaldehyde derives its name from formic acid and benzaldehyde from benzoic acid.
Aliphatic ketones are named by suffixing the word “ketone” to the...
Local Anesthetics: Common Agents and Their Applications
Cocaine is an ester of benzoic acid and methylecgogine. It is used to anesthetize and vasoconstrict locally. Currently, it is used primarily for topical applications. It is beneficial for surgeries on the upper respiratory tract, providing anesthesia and shrinking the mucosa. Cocaine in the form of cocaine hydrochloride is...
