Inflammatory responses after vitrectomy with vitreous substitutes in a rabbit model

Healaflow® and balanced saline solution (BSS) showed minimal inflammatory reactions, unlike Bio-Alcamid® and silicone oil, which caused significant inflammation and gliosis. Healaflow® is a promising vitreous substitute.

- Postoperative clinical and histological examinations included immunohistochemical analysis for inflammatory markers (GFAP, CD45, galectin-3, CD68, CD20).
Main Results:
- Healaflow® and BSS showed minimal macroscopic and histological inflammation.
- Bio-Alcamid® induced severe retinal inflammation and damage.
- Silicone oil also showed significant inflammation, gliosis (GFAP upregulation), and immune cell infiltration (CD45, CD68, CD20).
- Galectin-3 was upregulated in all groups.
Conclusions:
- Healaflow® elicits minimal inflammatory reactions, comparable to BSS.
- Bio-Alcamid® and silicone oil demonstrate significant inflammatory profiles and gliosis.
- Healaflow® shows potential as a safe vitreous substitute for clinical use.
