Quality Assurance01:19

Quality Assurance

2.2K
Quality assurance is the overarching term used to describe the activities employed to ensure the proper performance of a system. These activities can be classified into three categories: quality control, quality assessment, and internal corrective measures. Typically, these activities work cyclically: quality control is performed before and during the analysis, while quality assessment occurs during and after the investigation. Internal corrective measures are implemented based on the findings...

Geometric Mean01:15

Geometric Mean

4.0K
The mean is a measure of the central tendency of a data set. In some data sets, the data is inherently multiplicative, and the arithmetic mean is not useful. For example, the human population multiplies with time, and so does the credit amount of financial investment, as the interest compounds over successive time intervals.
In cases of multiplicative data, the geometric mean is used for statistical analysis. First, the product of all the elements is taken. Then, if there are n elements in the...

Geometric Sequences01:30

Geometric Sequences

284
In systems where values diminish by a constant proportion at each stage, the resulting sequence follows a geometric structure. Each new value in the sequence is obtained by applying a fixed multiplier to the preceding term. This regular, proportional decline type is often used to represent processes involving gradual loss, such as energy dissipation or reduction in amplitude over time. When analyzing the total effect of such a process across unlimited iterations, the series of values is referred...

Quality Control01:05

Quality Control

2.4K
Quality control is one of the three cyclical quality assurance activities that help keep a system under statistical control. Typical quality control activities include creating quality control charts, conducting proficiency testing, and documenting and archiving results.
Quality control helps track data, visualize trends, and identify variations, making it easier to detect deviations that may affect the accuracy of an analysis. One way to do this is by generating a quality control chart, which...

Quality of Water01:19

Quality of Water

559
In concrete preparation, the quality of water is paramount as it affects the strength and durability of the concrete. Potable water is usually preferred; however, it must not have excessive sodium or potassium to prevent compromising the concrete's integrity. Water quality is typically evaluated based on impurities such as dissolved solids, chlorides, and sulfates, and its pH value is ideally between 6 and 8. Even slightly acidic natural water may be acceptable unless it contains harmful...

Preclinical Development: Overview01:28

Preclinical Development: Overview

6.0K
Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Physics
  • Radiotherapy
  • Preclinical Research

Background:

  • Mechanical and geometric accuracy are critical for small animal image-guided radiotherapy (SA-IGRT) systems.
  • System-related factors can cause significant errors in preclinical radiation research due to small dimensions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement a comprehensive quality assurance (QA) framework for characterizing the mechanical and geometric constancy and accuracy of the small animal radiation research platform (SARRP) system.

Main Methods:

  • Quantified gantry and stage rotation isocentricity and positional stage translations.
  • Determined accuracy and symmetry of collimator-formed field sizes.
  • Evaluated collimator assembly alignment during gantry rotation.
  • Quantified end-to-end precision and accuracy of image-guided delivery by examining isocenter congruence.

Main Results:

  • Beam central axes differed between fine and broad beams (offset toward cathode by 0.22 ± 0.05 mm).
  • Larger collimators were more symmetrically centered than smaller ones; some collimators showed deviations in field size and shape.
  • Gantry rotation isocenter size was 1.45 ± 0.15 mm, with displacements up to -0.34 mm (lateral) and 0.33 mm (longitudinal).
  • Stage translational accuracies were within 0.015 mm; stage rotation runout was 2.73 ± 0.3 mm.
  • Displacements of intended and actual delivery isocenters were 0.24 ± 0.10 mm (X), 0.12 ± 0.62 mm (Y), and 0.12 ± 0.42 mm (Z).

Conclusions:

  • The electronic portal imaging device (EPID) on the SARRP is effective for geometric QA tests.
  • The developed QA methodology is applicable to any digital imaging detector in SA-IGRT systems or film.
  • The methodology can be adapted for QA of non-IGRT cabinet irradiators used in preclinical research.
