This lesson deals with the crossed aldol reaction using weak bases. The self-condensation of an aldehyde having α hydrogen is prevented by adding it slowly to a mixture of formaldehyde and weak bases like hydroxide and alkoxide. Upon slow addition of the aldehyde, the base deprotonates the α carbon of the aldehyde to form the corresponding enolate. The enolate subsequently attacks the formaldehyde to form a single crossed product. Figure 1 depicts the aforementioned reaction.

  • To evaluate the relationship between optimism, pessimism, and migraine-related disability in a population-based sample.

  • An observational, cross-sectional study in São Paulo, Brazil, using a stratified, multi-stage probability sample.
  • Validated questionnaires assessed demographics, headache features, migraine disability, depression, anxiety, optimism, and pessimism.
  • Binary and ordinal logistic regression analyses were used to determine associations.

Main Results:

  • 162 individuals with migraine and 140 headache-free controls were analyzed.
  • Pessimism and anxiety were significant predictors of meeting migraine criteria.
  • Optimism showed an inverse association with migraine-related disability.

Conclusions:

  • Optimism and pessimism are associated with migraine diagnosis and disability.
  • Further exploration of these psychosocial factors is recommended for migraine research and treatment strategies.
