  • Right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) is a personality construct associated with adherence to social hierarchies and conventional norms.
  • Meaning in life (MIL) is crucial for psychological well-being and existential security.
  • The existential functions of RWA, including its potential to provide meaning and buffer existential threats, remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the existential and existential buffering functions of RWA.
  • To examine whether the facets of meaning (purpose, coherence, significance) mediate these functions.
  • To explore the role of religiosity and other covariates in the RWA-MIL relationship.

Main Methods:

  • Four studies (N=2,319; N=505; N=971; N=833) were conducted, measuring RWA and MIL.
  • Study 1 included covariates like Protestant Work Ethic and religiosity.
  • Studies 2-4 examined specific MIL facets, psychological distress, and employed moderated mediation analyses.

  • RWA and MIL were consistently positively correlated across all studies.
