Skeletal muscle relaxants are widely used for muscle paralysis and relieving pain following any muscle injury or stiffness. Summary

Post-LP headache (PLPH) is common in multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, with age and female gender as key predictors. Most headaches resolve within 48 hours, but some persist for a week.

Background:

  • Lumbar puncture (LP) is a standard diagnostic tool for multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Post-LP headache (PLPH) is the primary adverse event associated with LP.
  • Predictors for PLPH in MS patients remain largely unestablished.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of PLPH in patients undergoing LP for suspected MS.
  • To identify factors associated with the occurrence and persistence of PLPH.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 100 patients admitted for diagnostic LP using a 19-G needle was observed.
  • Patients were monitored for adverse events at 48 hours and 7 days post-procedure.
  • Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis were employed to identify PLPH predictors.

Main Results:

  • 57% of patients experienced PLPH within 48 hours; 31% had persistent headaches at 7 days.
  • Age was the sole predictor for PLPH at 48 hours.
