Summary

Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) is often misdiagnosed. Spirometry and provocation tests can help confirm VCD when laryngoscopy is negative, improving diagnosis of this underdiagnosed condition.

Background:

  • Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) presents with paradoxical inspiratory laryngeal motion, frequently mistaken for asthma.
  • Diagnosis is challenging due to laryngoscopy's limited sensitivity outside symptomatic episodes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize VCD symptomatology.
  • To assess the utility of less-invasive diagnostic tools like provocation tests and spirometry for VCD diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 84 patients with suspected VCD.
  • Diagnostic tests included laryngoscopy, provocation testing, and spirometry.

  • VCD was confirmed in 87% of patients.
  • Spirometry (84%) and provocation tests (68%) were more frequently diagnostic than laryngoscopy (8%).
