A pulse is a short burst of radio waves distributed over a range of frequencies that simultaneously excites all the nuclei in the sample. Background:

  • Radiofrequency interference (RFI) is a recognized concern for medical device safety.
  • However, documented instances of RFI leading to inaccurate laboratory test results are scarce.

Observation:

  • An unexpected hematology analyzer malfunction led to erroneous white blood cell (WBC) counts.
  • Initial suspicions of hardware failure shifted towards RFI due to a temporal correlation with increased antenna power output nearby.

Findings:

  • Increased antenna power output, situated approximately 4 feet from the analyzer, caused RFI.
  • This interference resulted in aberrant side scatter and abnormal WBC counts.
  • Disabling the antenna resolved the instrument's performance issues.

Implications:

  • This study demonstrates RFI as the definitive cause of erroneous WBC counts in a hematology analyzer.
  • RFI should be considered a potential interfering factor when clinical laboratory instruments yield inconsistent or unreliable data.
