    Background:

    • The perception-action coupling task (PACT) was developed as an ecologically valid alternative to current alertness/reaction time measures in aerospace.
    • Existing measures may lack the ecological validity required for real-world aerospace applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the reliability, within-subject variability, and systematic bias of the PACT.
    • To determine the optimal familiarization period for PACT administration.

    Main Methods:

    • Sixteen participants (9 male, 7 female; age 27.8 ± 3.6 yr) completed four identical PACT sessions.
    • PACT involves judging if a virtual ball fits an aperture, with accuracy and reaction time recorded over nine 5-min cycles per session.
    • Systematic bias, reliability (ICC), and within-subject variability (CVTE) were statistically analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Initiation time exhibited the most significant systematic bias, necessitating the removal of the first three cycles.
    • Following the removal of the initial three cycles, all measured variables demonstrated acceptable reliability (ICC > 0.70).
    • Within-subject variability was also acceptable (CVTE < 20%) for all variables after the familiarization period.

    Conclusions:

    • The PACT is a reliable and stable measure of alertness and reaction time when preceded by a three-cycle familiarization period.
    • PACT offers a promising, ecologically valid tool for aerospace research and operational monitoring.
