A rare myeloid sarcoma with megakaryoblastic differentiation, likely from myelodysplastic syndrome, was found in the conjunctiva. This is the first reported case of this specific tumor type in the conjunctiva.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Hematology
- Oncology
Background:
- Conjunctival masses can present with diverse etiologies.
- Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor of myeloid blasts.
- Megakaryoblastic differentiation is a rare subtype of myeloid sarcoma.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the first case of conjunctival myeloid sarcoma with megakaryoblastic differentiation.
- To characterize the clinical, immunophenotypic, and cytogenetic features of this rare entity.
Main Methods:
- Histopathological examination of the conjunctival mass.
- Immunophenotyping of tumor cells.
- Bone marrow examination.
- Cytogenetic analysis.
Main Results:
- A multinodular epibulbar and forniceal mass was diagnosed as myeloid sarcoma with megakaryoblastic differentiation.
- Immunophenotyping showed positivity for CD7, CD31, CD43, CD45, CD61, and CD117.
- Cytogenetics revealed trisomy 8 and a t(12;17) translocation.
- Negative markers ruled out nonhematopoietic tumors.
Conclusions:
- Conjunctival myeloid sarcoma with megakaryoblastic differentiation is a rare entity.
- The tumor likely originated from an underlying myelodysplastic syndrome.
- This case represents the first occurrence of this specific tumor type in the conjunctiva.
