Stimulating brain areas lateral preoptic (LPO) and ventral pallidum (VP) in rats influences threat tolerance. LPO stimulation increases locomotion and boldness, dependent on dopamine, while VP stimulation increases boldness independently of locomotion.

- The emboldening effects from LPO and VP stimulation appear to be fixed action responses rather than goal-directed behaviors.
