Summary

A rare coronary artery aneurysm in a young male was linked to a prior malaria infection. This case highlights a potential, previously unrecognized association between quartian malaria and coronary artery aneurysms.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) are uncommon, particularly in young individuals without traditional atherosclerosis risk factors.
  • Infectious etiologies for CAAs are rare, with few documented cases linked to specific pathogens.

Observation:

  • A 29-year-old male presented with acute myocardial infarction.
  • Medical history revealed prior episodes of quartian malaria.
  • Coronary arteriography identified an aneurysm in the proximal left anterior descending artery with thrombus.

Findings:

  • The patient had no atherosclerosis risk factors.
  • The coronary arterial aneurysm was potentially associated with a history of quartian malaria.
  • This represents the first reported case of a coronary artery aneurysm possibly related to quartian malaria.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Suggests a potential link between quartian malaria and the development of coronary artery aneurysms.
  • Highlights the importance of considering infectious causes in young patients with unexplained coronary artery abnormalities.
  • Warrants further investigation into the pathophysiology of malaria-associated vascular complications.
