Severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is strongly linked to severe osteoarthritis (OA). This study found a significant association between OSA severity and OA grade, suggesting OSA may be a novel risk factor for OA development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between obstructive sleep apnea severity and osteoarthritis grade.
  • To explore if OSA is a risk factor for OA development.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study recruited patients suspected of OSA undergoing polysomnography.
  • Patients were categorized by apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) into mild, moderate, severe OSA, and control groups.
  • Osteoarthritis severity was graded using the Kellgren-Lawrence scoring system (0-4).

Main Results:

  • A strong correlation was found between OSA severity and OA grade.
  • All patients (33) with Grade 4 OA had severe OSA; none with Grade 1 OA had severe OSA (p<0.05).
  • This association was independent of body-mass index and correlated positively with hs-CRP levels.

Conclusions:
