Boundary Conditions for Current Density01:25

Boundary Conditions for Current Density

1.3K
Current density becomes discontinuous across an interface of materials with different electrical conductivities. The normal component of the current density is continuous across the boundary.

Inhaled Medications01:23

Inhaled Medications

792
Inhaled medications are crucial for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They are essential for effective treatment and control, ensuring optimal respiratory health and well-being. Inhaled medication delivers drugs directly to the lungs, providing a rapid onset of action and reducing systemic side effects compared to oral or injectable medications. Three primary types of inhalation devices are used to administer these medications: nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers...

Genetics of Speciation

21.0K
Speciation is the evolutionary process resulting in the formation of new, distinct species—groups of reproductively isolated populations.

What is Population Genetics?01:25

What is Population Genetics?

64.7K
A population is composed of members of the same species that simultaneously live and interact in the same area. When individuals in a population breed, they pass down their genes to their offspring. Many of these genes are polymorphic, meaning that they occur in multiple variants. Such variations of a gene are referred to as alleles. The collective set of all the alleles within a population is known as the gene pool.

Electrical Current01:10

Electrical Current

7.1K
Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836).

Area of Science:

  • Medical Genetics
  • Healthcare Workforce Studies
  • Public Health Policy

Background:

  • Current medical genetics practice faces challenges in meeting patient demand.
  • Access to genetic services is crucial for effective healthcare delivery.
  • Understanding workforce needs is essential for policy development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current state of medical genetics practice.
  • To identify workforce needs and challenges in genetic services.
  • To inform public policy for improving access to genetic care.

Main Methods:

  • A 16-question electronic survey was distributed in 2015.
  • Data collected from genetics professionals and related providers.
  • Utilized professional directories and social media for participant recruitment.

Main Results:

  • Over 92% of respondents are involved in clinical care, with geneticists spending significant time with patients.
  • Practices are nearly full, with high patient caseloads and numerous job vacancies for geneticists and genetic counselors.
  • Telemedicine use is reported by fewer than 18% of respondents.

Conclusions:

  • The number of geneticists has not kept pace with the increasing demand for genetic services.
  • Wait times and patient caseloads have significantly increased.
  • There is a clear need to address workforce shortages in medical genetics.
