Thirdhand smoke (THS) is a growing concern in China. Media analysis reveals that cancer and smoking cessation are the most reported THS topics, highlighting a need for evidence-based reporting.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Health
- Public Health Communication
- Media Studies
Background:
- Thirdhand smoke (THS) comprises residual tobacco smoke pollutants on surfaces and in dust.
- These pollutants can be re-emitted or react to form secondary pollutants.
- THS has been a significant and growing topic of discussion in China.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze media reports on THS in China using topic modeling.
- To understand the media's role in communicating THS as a public health issue.
- To identify key themes and trends in THS media coverage.
Main Methods:
- Data sourced from Wiser and Factiva news databases (2013-2017).
- Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) used to identify top 10 THS topics.
- LDAvis and Multidimensional Scaling for topic visualization and intertopic distance analysis.
Main Results:
- 745 articles analyzed; US led publications (152), China (279), US (363).
- In China, 'Cancer' was the most frequent topic (31.9% of reports).
- 'Control of quitting smoking' was the second most common topic (approx. 15%).
Conclusions:
- Topic modeling provides valuable insights into media reporting on THS.
- Chinese media coverage focuses on diseases, PM2.5, and control measures.
- Recommends more scientific, less sensationalized reporting and further sentiment analysis studies.

Analysis Methods of Pharmacokinetic Data: Model and Model-Independent Approaches
The model approach uses mathematical models to describe changes in drug concentration over time. Pharmacokinetic models help characterize drug behavior in patients, predict drug concentration in the body fluids, calculate optimum dosage regimens, and evaluate the risk of toxicity. However, ensuring that the model fits the experimental data accurately...
