Background:

  • Psoriasis (PsO) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting 2%-4% globally.
  • Growing understanding links PsO pathogenesis to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature on the prevalence and risk of T2D in patients diagnosed with PsO.
  • To synthesize current evidence regarding the association between psoriasis and type 2 diabetes.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of large retrospective cohort and case-control studies.
  • Analysis of epidemiological data on T2D prevalence in PsO cohorts versus general populations.

Main Results:

  • Studies consistently show increased T2D prevalence in PsO patients compared to controls.
  • This association was particularly noted in late-onset (type 2) psoriasis.
  • T2D prevalence did not correlate with patient age or psoriasis severity in the reviewed studies.
