This study presents enhanced nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) thin films. The novel material combination significantly improves NO2 detection, offering a promising solution for environmental monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Chemical Sensing
Background:
- Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is a semiconductor with potential gas sensing applications.
- Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) possesses unique electronic properties.
- Developing sensitive and selective gas sensors is crucial for environmental monitoring.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the NO2 gas sensing properties of V2O5 thin films decorated with rGO.
- To explore the role of p-n heterojunctions in enhancing gas sensing performance.
- To evaluate the potential of rGO-decorated V2O5 for environmental NO2 detection.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of V2O5 thin films using DC sputtering.
- Decoration of V2O5 films with rGO using the drop-cast method.
- Characterization of the gas sensing performance of the fabricated sensors at various conditions.
Main Results:
- The rGO-decorated V2O5 sensor exhibited a significantly higher NO2 response (approx. 61% increase) compared to the pristine V2O5 sensor.
- The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunctions between rGO and V2O5.
- Oxygen functional groups on the rGO surface further contributed to the improved sensing capabilities.
Conclusions:
- rGO-decorated V2O5 thin films demonstrate superior NO2 gas sensing properties.
- The developed sensors are highly suitable for timely NO2 detection, aiding in ecosystem protection.
- The study highlights the potential of heterojunction engineering for advanced gas sensor development.
