Mindfulness meditation improved speech fluency and auditory processing in healthy adults. Eight weeks of practice enhanced speech performance under delayed auditory feedback and altered brain responses to sound.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Psychology
- Rehabilitation Science
Background:
- Motor actions are modulated by sensory feedback.
- Mindfulness meditation enhances sensory awareness.
- Sensory feedback is crucial for motor function rehabilitation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation on speech perception and production.
- To assess changes in speech performance under delayed auditory feedback (DAF).
- To measure event-related potential (ERP) responses to auditory stimuli.
Main Methods:
- Thirty healthy participants were divided into a meditation group (10 min/day for 8 weeks) and a control group.
- Speech performance was assessed during sentence reading under DAF and no-delay conditions.
- Auditory evoked potentials were measured in response to /a/ sounds.
Main Results:
- The meditation group showed significantly improved speech fluency in the DAF condition after 8 weeks.
- A 16-minute meditation session before experiments further enhanced speech fluency.
- Significantly increased auditory evoked potentials were observed in the central-parietal region during DAF.
Conclusions:
- Mindfulness meditation practice can enhance speech fluency and auditory processing.
- Mindfulness meditation may offer potential clinical applications for speech and auditory rehabilitation.
- Further studies should consider differential daily activity instructions between groups.
