This study validated the Polish version of the Resilience Scale RS-14 for adolescents and young adults. The scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties, confirming its utility for assessing resilience in diverse Polish youth populations.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Psychometrics
- Adolescent Development
Background:
- A need exists for a reliable instrument to measure trait-like resilience in Polish adolescents and young adults.
- Existing resilience measures may not be culturally adapted or validated for the Polish population.
- Trait-like resilience is a crucial factor in psychological well-being and adaptation across developmental stages.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate the Polish version of the Resilience Scale RS-14 (Wagnild, 2009a,b) for use with Polish adolescents and young adults.
- To examine the psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, of the RS-14 in diverse Polish samples.
- To confirm the factor structure of the RS-14 in young adolescents, a problem group with special needs, and early adults.
Main Methods:
- Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were employed to assess the factor structure of the RS-14.
- The study utilized three distinct samples: young adolescents (N=400), a problem group with special needs (N=656), and early adults (N=1,659).
- Reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and test-retest stability were calculated, alongside convergent and divergent validity analyses correlating with measures of life satisfaction, perceived stress, and depression.
Main Results:
- Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a good fit for the original one-dimensional factor structure of the RS-14 across all three samples.
- All items loaded significantly onto a single factor, explaining substantial variance (31.11%–38.51%).
- The scale demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.82 to 0.87) and excellent test-retest stability (r=0.88).
- The RS-14 showed significant correlations with related constructs, positively with life satisfaction and negatively with perceived stress and depression, supporting its validity.
Conclusions:
- The Polish version of the Resilience Scale RS-14 is a psychometrically sound and valid instrument for assessing resilience.
- The RS-14 is suitable for use with diverse Polish adolescent and young adult populations, including those with special needs.
- This validated scale can be a valuable tool for researchers and clinicians evaluating resilience in Polish youth.
