Summary

Skipping breakfast before resistance exercise can decrease performance in trained individuals who habitually eat breakfast. Consuming a carbohydrate-rich meal beforehand may optimize strength training results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of breakfast omission versus consumption on subsequent resistance exercise performance.
  • To assess subjective feelings of hunger and satiety in relation to exercise.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen resistance-trained men who regularly consumed breakfast participated.
  • Subjects completed two randomized trials: breakfast consumption (BC) and breakfast omission (BO).
  • Performance was measured by total repetitions completed in back squat and bench press at 90% of 10RM.

Main Results:

  • Fewer repetitions were completed during the breakfast omission (BO) trial for both back squat and bench press compared to the breakfast consumption (BC) trial.
  • Subjective ratings indicated greater fullness and lower hunger, desire to eat, and prospective food consumption after BC versus BO.

Conclusions:

  • Omission of a pre-exercise breakfast can impair resistance exercise performance in habitual breakfast consumers.
  • Consuming a high-carbohydrate breakfast before resistance exercise may be a beneficial strategy to maximize performance.
