Right ventricle (RV) function declines immediately after valvular heart surgery but gradually improves over one month, as shown by tissue Doppler and RV strain imaging. This study highlights the utility of these techniques in assessing subtle RV changes post-surgery.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Imaging
- Cardiac Surgery
- Echocardiography
Background:
- Valvular heart surgery can impact right ventricle (RV) function.
- Assessing RV myocardial deformation is crucial for understanding surgical outcomes.
- Tissue Doppler and strain imaging offer advanced methods for RV evaluation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) pre- and post-valvular heart surgery.
- To evaluate changes in tissue Doppler parameters following valve surgery.
- To analyze RV tissue deformation and RV strain in patients before and after surgery.
Main Methods:
- Observational, cross-sectional study of 24 patients undergoing echocardiography.
- Assessments included M-mode, 2D Doppler, tissue Doppler imaging, and strain imaging.
- Echocardiograms were performed pre-surgery, immediately post-surgery, and at 1-month follow-up.
Main Results:
- TAPSE significantly decreased immediately after surgery but improved at 1-month follow-up (p=0.001).
- RV free wall strain was reduced pre-surgery and improved post-surgery and at follow-up (p=0.001).
- Tricuspid valve diastolic velocity increased post-surgery, then gradually declined at follow-up (p=0.003).
Conclusions:
- RV myocardial deformation gradually improves 1 month after cardiac valvular surgery.
- An immediate decline in RV function is observed postsurgery, with varied contraction patterns.
- Tissue deformation imaging effectively assesses subtle RV functional changes in valve surgery patients.

pre-mRNA Processing
Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a “cap” to the 5’ end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5’ phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached to it (7-Methyl...
