Background:

The 2014 Ebola epidemic underscored the global threat of high-consequence infectious diseases.
Healthcare facilities worldwide must be prepared for patient identification, isolation, and care during outbreaks.
The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit (NBU) managed patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD), necessitating robust symptom monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the NBU's experience with symptom monitoring during the Ebola epidemic.
To develop a more efficient and cost-effective solution for symptom monitoring in infectious disease outbreaks.
To evaluate the utility of REDCap for creating a symptom monitoring application.

Main Methods:

The NBU implemented a twice-daily symptom monitoring protocol for healthcare workers.
Lessons learned from this experience informed the development of a new application.
RECap, an open-source platform, was utilized to build an inexpensive symptom monitoring tool.

Main Results:

Pilot activities demonstrated the feasibility of the REDCap-based symptom monitoring application.
The application showed promise in reducing costs and resource demands.
A more user-friendly experience was achieved for both monitored individuals and public health officials.

Conclusions:

The novel use of REDCap provides an efficient and cost-effective approach to symptom monitoring during infectious disease outbreaks.
