Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the effects of exercise training on exercise capacity in adults with advanced lung cancer.
  • To assess exercise training's impact on muscle force, quality of life, dyspnea, fatigue, anxiety, depression, lung function, and survival.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing exercise training with no exercise.
  • Searched multiple databases including CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Pedro, and SciELO.
  • Included six RCTs with 221 participants; data analyzed for various outcomes including exercise capacity (6MWD, VO₂peak) and HRQoL.

  • Exercise training significantly increased exercise capacity (6MWD) by 63.33m compared to controls.

  • No significant differences were found for physical functioning HRQoL, dyspnea, fatigue, anxiety, depression, or lung function (FEV₁).

Conclusions:

  • Exercise training may improve or prevent decline in exercise capacity and disease-specific HRQoL in advanced lung cancer patients.
  • Current evidence is limited by high risk of bias and small sample sizes across studies.
  • Larger, high-quality RCTs are essential to confirm these findings and guide clinical practice.
