IUD appendicitis during pregnancy.

D I McLaughlin, W Bevins, B K Karas

    The Western Journal of Medicine
    |November 1, 1988
    PubMed
    Summary

Abdominal X-rays may miss misplaced intrauterine devices (IUDs) in pregnant women. Chronic inflammation and adhesions from misplaced IUDs can cause long-term pain and complications, even after removal.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Medicine
    • Diagnostic Imaging
    • Gynecologic Surgery

    Background:

    • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are common contraceptives.
    • Misplacement of IUDs, particularly during pregnancy, can lead to complications.
    • Accurate imaging is crucial for diagnosing IUD-related issues.

    Observation:

    • Abdominal and pelvic X-rays may fail to visualize a misplaced IUD in a gravid uterus.
    • Chronic inflammation around a misplaced IUD can occur years after insertion.
    • Dense adhesions can form due to the inflammatory response to a misplaced IUD.

    Findings:

    • Initial X-ray examinations may be insufficient for detecting misplaced IUDs in pregnant patients.
    • Delayed diagnosis of IUD misplacement can result in chronic abdominal pain and other complications.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Persistent risks of complications exist even after IUD removal due to adhesions.
  • Implications:

    • Further diagnostic imaging and workup are necessary if an IUD is not clearly seen on initial X-rays in gravid women.
    • Management strategies should consider the potential for long-term sequelae of IUD misplacement, including chronic pain and adhesions.
    • Surgical planning for IUD removal or related complications must account for dense adhesions resulting from chronic inflammation.
