Background:

  • Alopecia areata (AA) is a noncicatricial hair loss condition.
  • While considered autoimmune, oxidative stress and trace elements are implicated in AA's etiology.
  • Essential trace elements play vital roles in human biological functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum levels of specific heavy metals in patients diagnosed with alopecia areata.
  • To compare heavy metal concentrations between AA patients and a healthy control group.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples were collected from 30 patients with AA and 31 healthy controls.
  • Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was employed to quantify serum levels of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), cobalt (Co), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb).

Main Results:

  • Serum zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) levels were significantly lower in the AA patient group compared to controls (P<0.05).
  • Serum levels of cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), and copper (Cu) were significantly higher in AA patients than in the control group (P<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Low serum zinc and manganese levels are associated with alopecia areata.
  • Zinc supplementation may offer therapeutic benefits for AA.
  • Iron levels were elevated, suggesting iron prescription may not be beneficial for AA.
