Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Background:

Mesoscale turbulence is crucial for ocean circulation, water mass formation, and tracer transport.
Understanding how ocean mixing varies over climate timescales remains a significant knowledge gap.

Purpose of the Study:

To present the first time-resolved global dataset of lateral mesoscale eddy diffusivities at the ocean surface.
To investigate the drivers of variability in ocean mixing on interannual timescales.

Main Methods:

Application of the suppressed mixing length theory.
Analysis of satellite-observed ocean velocities.
Correlation of mixing variability with climate indices (ENSO, NAO, DMI, PDO).

Main Results:

Global interannual variability in lateral mesoscale eddy diffusivities was identified.
Variability in mixing length, driven by large-scale flow, was found to be a dominant factor, exceeding local eddy kinetic energy effects.
Regional correlations with major climate indices were observed.

The study reveals a novel mechanism for ocean mixing variability driven by large-scale flow dynamics.
This mechanism, currently absent in global climate models, may significantly influence global heat, salt, and carbon distribution.
