  • To determine if semantic association alone, or combined with perceptual match, influences face recognition memory.

  • Faces were presented with either word (W) or picture (P) contexts during study.
  • Test phase included consistent (WW, PP) and inconsistent (WP, PW) context conditions, incorporating a Re-pair condition.

  • No familiarity effect was observed when only conceptual match was present (inconsistent condition).
  • Both binding and familiarity effects were present when both conceptual and perceptual matches were present (consistent condition).

Conclusions:
