- Organizational Behavior
Background:
- Mental retirement, characterized by work disconnection, poses a challenge to sustainable employability.
- Addressing mental retirement is crucial due to an aging workforce and evolving skill demands.

- To evaluate a tailor-made intervention process designed to combat work disconnection.
Main Methods:
- Prospective cohort study with a one-year follow-up.
- Sample of 683 Dutch employees from three organizations.
- Measurement of mental retirement using questionnaires assessing developmental pro-activity, work engagement, and perceived appreciation.
Main Results:
- Multilevel analysis of 466 employees indicated a statistically significant decrease in mental retirement.
- Higher employee participation in interventions correlated with a greater reduction in mental retirement.
Conclusions:
- The participatory program demonstrated a tendency to reduce mental retirement among Dutch employees.
- Improving intervention implementation and participant commitment is essential for program success.
- Future research should employ enhanced designs, including control groups and multiple data sources, to further validate effectiveness.
