Summary

Shift workers consuming more vegetables (VEG) showed lower inflammation markers, while those with higher intake of liquid oils, fast food, and eggs (LFE) had increased inflammation. Dietary patterns significantly impact inflammatory cytokines in shift workers.

  • Rotational shift work is linked to immune dysfunction and inflammation.
  • Shift work may also contribute to unhealthy dietary habits.
  • Previous research has not explored dietary patterns and inflammation in shift workers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between dietary patterns and circulating proinflammatory cytokines in rotational shift workers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 257 male shift workers.
  • Dietary intake assessed using a semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire.
  • Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured.

Main Results:

  • Three dietary patterns identified: Vegetables (VEG), Liquid oils/Fast food/Eggs (LFE), and Tea/Coffee/Refined grains (TRS).
  • Higher adherence to VEG pattern correlated with lower IL-6 and TNF-α.
  • Higher adherence to LFE pattern showed a negative association with IL-6 and TNF-α.
  • No significant association found between VEG/LFE patterns and hs-CRP, or TRS pattern and any inflammatory markers.

Conclusions:

  • Adherence to VEG and LFE dietary patterns showed inverse and direct associations with serum IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations, respectively, in shift workers.
  • No significant associations were observed between these dietary patterns and hs-CRP levels.
  • The TRS dietary pattern was not significantly associated with any measured inflammatory cytokines.
