Primary gastrointestinal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: A prospective study from South India

Primary gastrointestinal lymphoma (PGIL) most commonly affects the stomach. Localized disease and complete response to chemotherapy improve survival, but rituximab cost hinders cure for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

- Primary GIT diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PGIL) is a specific subtype requiring dedicated epidemiological and clinical evaluation.

- To evaluate the epidemiological and clinicopathological characteristics of PGIL.
- To assess the treatment outcomes for patients with PGIL.

- Prospective study of newly diagnosed PGIL patients with DLBCL histology.

- Stage IV disease had significantly lower median survival (6.23 months) than localized disease (23.4 months). Patients not achieving complete response (CR) had a 15.5 times higher risk of death.

- The stomach is the predominant site for PGIL.
- Localized disease and achieving CR after first-line chemotherapy are linked to better survival outcomes.
- The high cost of rituximab presents a barrier to achieving a cure in these patients.
