Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential for root infection by Phytophthora ramorum in rhododendrons.
  • To determine if infected root systems can transmit the disease to above-ground plant parts.

Main Methods:

  • Rhododendron plants ('Nova Zembla' and Rhododendron macrophyllum) were grown in potting media artificially infested with P. ramorum (cultures, infected leaves, or zoospores).
  • Plants were watered from the bottom to prevent splash dispersal.
  • Isolation of P. ramorum from plant tissues and epifluorescence microscopy were performed.
