Lettuce mottle virus (LeMoV) was detected in field lettuce in Chile for the first time. This sequivirus was found at low incidence, extending its known range in South America.
Area of Science:
- Plant Virology
- Molecular Biology
- Agricultural Science
Background:
- Sequiviruses are aphidborne viruses affecting plants like lettuce.
- Dandelion yellow mosaic virus (DaYMV) and Lettuce mottle virus (LeMoV) are distinct sequivirus species causing mosaic symptoms.
- LeMoV has been previously identified in Brazil, often in mixed infections.
Purpose of the Study:
- To survey field-grown lettuce in Chile for the presence of Lettuce mottle virus (LeMoV).
- To characterize the sequivirus detected in Chilean lettuce samples.
- To determine the geographical distribution of LeMoV.
Main Methods:
- Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using specific LeMoV primers.
- RNA extraction from lettuce samples exhibiting mosaic symptoms.
- Transmission electron microscopy to visualize viral particles.
- Sequencing of a fragment of the viral replicase gene.
Main Results:
- LeMoV was detected in 4 out of 143 lettuce samples collected in Chile.
- Isometric particles (30 nm diameter) consistent with sequiviruses were observed.
- The sequenced isolate (Ch36) showed 97% amino acid identity to LeMoV from Brazil.
- No mixed infections with Lettuce mosaic virus (LMV) or Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were found.
Conclusions:
- This is the first report of a sequivirus, specifically LeMoV, in field lettuce in Chile.
- The findings extend the known geographical range of LeMoV to the western side of the Andes.
- Further analysis is needed to understand the impact of LeMoV in Chile and other South American countries.

Introduction to Documentation and Reporting
Nursing documentation records essential information and details regarding a patient's care and treatment in written or electronic form. It is a critical aspect of nursing practice that involves documenting assessments, interventions, outcomes, and other relevant details about a patient's health status.
Documentation maps the patient's health journey by creating a comprehensive...
