What is Natural Selection?01:32

What is Natural Selection?

128.5K
Natural selection is an evolutionary process in which individuals with survival-promoting traits reproduce at higher rates. These favorable traits become more common within a population or species. Naturally selected traits initially arise via random genetic mutations. In order for selection to occur, there must be variation within a population, the trait controlling the variation must be heritable, and there must be an evolutionary advantage for variation in the trait.

Nature and Nurture01:10

Nature and Nurture

22.3K
Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience,...

Fixed Action Patterns01:06

Fixed Action Patterns

17.6K
A fixed action pattern (FAP) is a specific, hard-wired sequence of behaviors that occurs in response to an external stimulus, called a sign stimulus. The behavior is “fixed” because it is essentially unchangeable—proceeding similarly across individuals of a species every time it occurs.

Chirality in Nature02:30

Chirality in Nature

17.2K
Chirality is the most intriguing yet essential facet of nature, governing life’s biochemical processes and precision. It can be observed from a snail shell pattern in a macroscopic world to an amino acid, the minutest building block of life. Most of the snails around the world have right-coiled shells because of the intrinsic chirality in their genes. All the amino acids present in the human body exist in an enantiomerically pure state, except for glycine - the sole achiral amino acid.

Nursing Interventions I: Taxonomy of Nursing Interventions

3.7K
Nursing interventions are chosen as part of the planning process to achieve patient outcomes. Once nursing diagnoses are determined, the goals and outcomes are specified, then the nursing interventions are selected and individualized according to the patient's situation.
A nursing intervention is a treatment or action based on scientific concepts and knowledge from the nursing, behavioral, and physical sciences. Identifying and prioritizing nursing interventions based on the desired outcome...

Summary

This study explores the philosophical concept of natural kind to support the existence of a healing pattern in nursing. Further research is needed to provide empirical evidence for this natural nursing process.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Science
  • Philosophy of Science

Background:

  • The concept of a healing pattern is central to nursing.
  • Establishing its ontological status requires empirical validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To apply the philosophical notion of natural kind to nursing.
  • To support the investigation of the healing pattern as a natural phenomenon in nursing practice.

Main Methods:

  • Review of philosophical accounts of natural kind.
  • Application of these accounts to nursing and the healing pattern.

Main Results:

  • The philosophical framework of natural kind can be applied to nursing.
  • This application supports the ontological claim for a healing pattern.

Conclusions:

  • The healing pattern can be conceptualized as a natural kind within nursing.
  • Further empirical research is recommended to solidify evidence for the healing pattern.
