Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Education
  • School Health
  • Medical Training

Background:

  • Pediatric residents frequently face school health (SH) challenges, acting as crucial links between healthcare and education.
  • A gap exists in formal SH education for pediatric residents, hindering their preparedness for this role.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary learning conference designed to enhance pediatric residents' understanding of school health.
  • To improve residents' knowledge of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), and 504 plans.

Main Methods:

  • A 3-hour interactive conference was delivered to pediatric interns by a multidisciplinary team.
  • Curriculum focused on IEPs, IHPs, 504 plans, the IEP process, and school communication.
  • Pre- and post-surveys, reflective writing, and feedback sessions were utilized for evaluation.

Main Results:

  • Significant knowledge improvement was observed in 85% for IEP/504/IHP and 74% for SH personnel.
  • Post-curriculum, 85% of interns felt comfortable discussing accommodations with families, compared to 0% prior.
  • Interns reported the curriculum was valuable for their clinical practice.

Conclusions:

  • The developed curriculum effectively enhanced pediatric residents' knowledge and confidence in school health matters.
  • This multidisciplinary approach is easily adaptable for other residency programs, even with limited didactic time.
