Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between soft contact lens wear and the prevalence of pinguecula.
  • To explore the relationship between dry eye disease and pinguecula in contact lens wearers and non-wearers.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 233 soft contact lens wearers and 230 age-matched non-wearers.
  • Assessment of dry eye disease using Schirmer I test (ST) and tear break-up time (TBUT).
  • Utilized the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire to evaluate dry eye symptoms.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in pinguecula prevalence was found between contact lens wearers (27.8%) and non-wearers (26.5%).
  • Pinguecula prevalence increased with age in both groups, but duration of contact lens wear did not influence its occurrence.
  • Contact lens wearers exhibited lower TBUT and higher OSDI scores, indicating drier eyes. Patients with pinguecula had lower TBUT in both groups.

Conclusions:

  • Soft contact lens wear does not appear to affect the prevalence of pinguecula.
  • Contact lens wear might mitigate the symptomatic experience of pinguecula, as suggested by OSDI scores in the contact lens group.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the complex interplay between contact lens wear, dry eye, and pinguecula.
