Enteral Nutrition I: Orogastric and Nasogastric Feeding

1.4K
Enteral nutrition delivers nutrients directly to the stomach or small intestine through a tube. This method is appropriate for patients who cannot eat but still have a functioning digestive system. It is also beneficial for individuals with swallowing difficulties, anorexia, malabsorption, or those who have undergone gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.
Orogastric (OG) and nasogastric (NG) feeding are two standard methods used for enteral nutrition. Enteral nutrition is often preferred over...

Enteral Nutrition II: Nasointestinal and Gastrostomy Feeding

957
Enteral nutrition encompasses various methods of delivering nutrition directly to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, bypassing traditional oral intake. It is particularly beneficial for patients who cannot eat by mouth but have a functioning digestive system. Key methods include nasointestinal feeding, gastrostomy, and jejunostomy, each suited to different clinical scenarios based on the patient's needs and condition.

Regulation of Water Intake01:25

Regulation of Water Intake

2.7K
Osmolality refers to the number of solute particles per kilogram of solvent in a solution. Plasma osmolality specifically indicates the total number of solute particles per kilogram of water in blood plasma. This value reflects the body's hydration status and is tightly regulated through mechanisms controlling water intake and output. While water consumption is a conscious decision, the body has intrinsic regulatory systems to maintain fluid balance. Dehydration, a state of water deficit...

Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

2.8K
Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Prediction Intervals

3.4K
The interval estimate of any variable is known as the prediction interval. It helps decide if a point estimate is dependable.
However, the point estimate is most likely not the exact value of the population parameter, but close to it. After calculating point estimates, we construct interval estimates, called confidence intervals or prediction intervals. This prediction interval comprises a range of values unlike the point estimate and is a better predictor of the observed sample value, y.

Summary

Estimating dairy cow feed efficiency (FE) using digesta markers is challenging. While marker-based dry matter intake (DMI) estimates show promise, biases exist, necessitating careful equation development for accurate FE prediction.

Area of Science:

  • Animal Science
  • Dairy Nutrition
  • Feed Efficiency

Background:

  • Direct measurement of individual animal dry matter intake (DMI) is difficult, hindering accurate assessment of dairy cow feed efficiency (FE).
  • Digesta marker techniques are commonly used indirect methods for estimating DMI in production animals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance of marker-based DMI estimates against direct measurements in dairy cows.
  • To develop prediction equations for dairy cow FE (g energy-corrected milk (ECM)/kg DMI) using marker-based data.

Main Methods:

  • A meta-analysis of 29 change-over studies involving 416 cow-within period observations.
  • Comparison of observed DMI, fecal dry matter output (FDMO), and apparent total tract dry matter digestibility (DMD) with marker-based estimates (eFDMO, eDMD, eDMI).
  • Statistical analysis using mixed procedures to estimate variance components and repeatability, and regression analysis to assess prediction accuracy and biases.

Main Results:

  • Marker-based estimates showed good relationships with observed measurements (R² ranging from 0.68 to 0.87), but significant mean and slope biases were detected.
  • Biases accounted for a substantial portion of the prediction errors for FDMO, DMD, DMI, and FE.
  • The best predictive model for FE incorporated energy-corrected milk (ECM), body weight (BW), and estimated fecal dry matter output (eFDMO); eDMD did not significantly improve FE prediction.

Conclusions:

  • Despite inherent inaccuracies, estimated fecal dry matter output (eFDMO) from external markers provides a reliable basis for feed efficiency measurement in dairy cows.
  • Estimated apparent total tract dry matter digestibility (eDMD) using internal markers did not enhance FE prediction, likely due to limited variability.
  • Further refinement of marker techniques and equation development is crucial for accurate dairy cow feed efficiency assessment.
