  • To describe methods for collecting near-real-time data on partner violence and alcohol use.
  • To address challenges in recruitment, retention, adherence, data validity, and participant safety.

Main Methods:

  • 20 heterosexual couples with violent relationships were enrolled.
  • Daily surveys on violence, alcohol use, and environment were conducted for 8 weeks via an interactive voice response (IVR) system.
  • Baseline and end-of-study surveys were also administered.

Main Results:

  • 15 couples completed the study with 90% adherence to daily reporting.
  • Verbal aggression was reported on average 11-13 days, and physical abuse on 2-4 days over 8 weeks.
  • Alcohol use was modest; discrepancies in reporting physical aggression between genders were noted.

  • Daily longitudinal research on partner violence is feasible using interactive voice response (IVR) systems.
