Phytoplasma infection, specifically stolbur-type phytoplasma (16SrXII group), was identified in Rhododendron plants exhibiting leaf malformation and variegation. This marks the first global detection of this phytoplasma in Rhododendron species.
Area of Science:
- Plant Pathology
- Phytoplasma Research
- Molecular Diagnostics
Background:
- Rhododendron plants ('Cunningham's White' PS986) displayed leaf malformation and variegation.
- Micropropagation of affected plants yielded symptomatic and asymptomatic regenerants.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify the causal agent of leaf malformation and variegation in Rhododendron.
- To characterize the phytoplasma detected in affected Rhododendron plants.
Main Methods:
- Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed for phytoplasma detection.
- Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was used for phytoplasma classification.
Main Results:
- Phytoplasma infection was confirmed in symptomatic Rhododendron plants, including the original specimen and regenerants.
- Phytoplasmas detected belonged to the stolbur phytoplasma group (16SrXII), identified via RFLP analysis of PCR fragments.
- Similar symptoms and phytoplasma infections were observed in other Rhododendron hybrids (PS2716, PS2439).
Conclusions:
- This study reports the first global identification of stolbur-type phytoplasma in Rhododendron.
- Phytoplasma infection is associated with leaf malformation and variegation symptoms in Rhododendron.

Detection of Black Holes
Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light.
Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

Effects of EDTA on End-Point Detection Methods
In the visual method, metal-ion indicators (metallochromic dyes), which have distinct colors in their free and complex forms, are added to the mixture to signal the titration's end point. They form stable complexes with metal ions, but these complexes are weaker than the corresponding metal–EDTA complexes. As a...
Types of Errors: Detection and Minimization
Absolute error in a measurement is the numerical difference from the true or central value. Relative error is the ratio between absolute error and the true or central value, expressed as a percentage.
Errors can be classified by source, magnitude, and sign. There are three types of errors: systematic, random, and gross.
