Background:

  • Sarcomatous carcinoma of the biliary system, encompassing sarcomatous intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (SIC) and sarcomatous choledochal carcinoma (SCC), represents an exceptionally rare and highly malignant clinical entity.
  • The precise etiology and optimal management strategies for these rare tumors remain poorly understood, necessitating further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics, diagnostic features, and outcomes of patients diagnosed with sarcomatous intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (SIC) and sarcomatous choledochal carcinoma (SCC).
  • To evaluate the efficacy of current treatment modalities and identify factors influencing prognosis in sarcomatous biliary carcinoma.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 9 patients (5 with SIC, 4 with SCC).

Conclusions:

  • Sarcomatous carcinoma of the biliary system is a rare and aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis.
  • Chronic inflammation may play a role in the pathogenesis, although the exact mechanism is unknown.
  • Urgent research is required to develop more effective therapeutic strategies and improve patient outcomes.
